Tosfos says that in order to transgress בל תוסיף the extra item has to be held דרך גדילתו – in the direction that it grows. According to ר”מ why is it permitted to bind the Lulav with gold band as gold doesn’t grow from the ground so should not be limited to דרך גדילתו?
